Switchel, The Vinegar, Honey And Water Remedy For Hot FlashesOne of the most effective natural remedies to get menopause relief from hot flashes, among other things, is switchell. Also known as swizzle, this drink is made of vinegar, honey and water. Ginger is also frequently added.
This drink originated in the Carribean and found it's way to colonial America, where farmers began drinking it during haying season. If you have ever made hay on a hot summer day, you will understand the need for a thirst quenching drink that also gives you energy! One woman I know had very intense hot flashes that also caused very uncomfortable night sweats. When a friend recommended switchel, she recalled her grandfather drinking it during haying time, so she gave it a try. To her relief, it worked. The hot flashes and night sweats virtually stopped immediately. Now this might not work for everyone, but it is certainly well worth a try, plus there are no side effects. Her recipe is quite simple. Boil water as if for tea, add a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of cider vinegar and mix it all together. That's it, unless you want to add some ginger, which makes a very soothing and refreshing drink. One way to use this during the day is to fill a water bottle and sip on it. If the hot flashes begin, she increases the amount of honey and cider vinegar. I suppose somebody has done clinical research on how and why this works for some women, but, from her point of view, if a remedy has lasted for centuries and works without any side effects, use it.
